Are you writing a thesis and should you write it in the special context of your company or an industry or do you have a special context for SMEs or associations? You will often find a lot of general literature and probably little literature specific to your field. This is quite normal as many researchers prefer to do broader research. Tip: If you cannot find any literature in general, then read my article: Help, I can’t find any literature! However, the fact that you are researching a specific niche is often of value in practice, as many results are not transferable to any industry. I have e.g. Researched SMEs and often heard about general results: this only applies to corporations or it is too expensive for us, … There are also almost no studies on agility in SMEs. It is therefore important that you work out the specific framework conditions…

At the beginning of their thesis, many students look for a scientific classification of the research. That sounds complicated at first, but after a lot of work it is actually not at all. I would like to present a model for this and also three scientific views. Method portfolio of business informatics Each of you will use different quantitative and qualitative methods to answer the research question. Quantitative research is the standardized and structured collection of data. So it represents real-world problems in a numerical representation. Qualitative research collects soft data that needs to be interpreted and therefore can be used dynamically for multiple contexts. Master theses often use both types. This is what is known as a mixed method approach. In a bachelor thesis, one of the two approaches is sufficient for me. Reading tip: More about both types of research There are also constructive and behavioral approaches. Constructive…

In spite of a dedicated literature analysis, it is often not easy to find suitable literature. For this reason I would like to give some pointers. This serves as an initial orientation and also shows at least the literature that I used more and more in my doctorate. The sources in bold are papers, which I particularly recommend. Reading tip: Find literature Digital transformation Auth, G., Meyer, P., & Porst, G. (2017). Recognition and use of technological innovations for the digital workplace of Deutsche Telekom. HMD Praxis der Wirtschaftsinformatik , 1-15. https://doi.org/10.1365/s40702-017-0365-7 Bley, K., & Leyh, C. (2016). Status Quo of the Digitization of German Industrial Companies – A Study of Selected Companies. In MKWI 2016 (pp. 1652-1664). Köffer, S., & Urbach, N. (2016). The digitization of knowledge work – recommendations for action from business informatics research. HMD Praxis der Wirtschaftsinformatik , 53 (1), 5-15. Urbach, N., & Ahlemann, F.…

Have you been searching for a few days and just can’t find any papers on the topic? In this text I would like to give tips for students who are currently unable to find any literature on their thesis. Incidentally, if you get the topic from a practice partner, then I recommend reading my other article. Reading tip: Thesis with practice partner “Help! I can’t find any literature! ” I often receive emails asking me the following: I am writing about topic X and cannot find any literature. Do you have any tips? In 99% of the cases I also send literature back. However, this is not to your advantage. The reason for this is that you have to state in your thesis: Why did you use this literature. An answer like: If Mr. Lindner sent me or came by chance at Google, your supervisor will probably not be very…

Many of you are writing your thesis in collaboration with a company. I also have my master’s thesis agile in the Waterfallworld written with a company. Here the topic should often be very practical and a problem for the company, but at the same time also very academic. The solution of a company-specific problem such as the introduction of a SAP in a medium-sized SME, however, is not a sufficient bachelor thesis in a strictly academic sense. By the way, if you don’t have a topic at all, please read on with my topic-finding article. Reading tip: Find topic “The subject is too practical or too theoretical!” So you are faced with the dilemma that the chair leans on the topic as too vague and the practice partner leans on the topic as too theoretical? For something like this, count on a coordination effort of 3 months. But it is…

You are about to graduate and it should now be a matter of writing a bachelor’s or master’s thesis. But you can’t think of a topic? You have been searching for days and there is simply no research gap or your research question is just too generic? In the following I can give you a rough guide. However, if you already have the topic and just want to narrow the question down, then I recommend another article. Reading tip: Narrow down the research question The tips are from my doctorate. For this reason these are quoted from it. Based on the wishes of my practice partners, I had to limit some topics and uncover other topics. That’s why I’m giving some literature tips. If you like a topic, the first step should be to develop a suitable research design. Reading tip: Find research design My other subject areas, which opened…

Many students would like to derive recommendations for action or a framework for companies in their thesis. This is basically a good idea, but it is often difficult and such frameworks or recommendations must not just be invented at random. In order to derive this meaningfully, there is the method of reference modeling, which is a constructive type of research. Reading tip: How do I classify my research scientifically? What is reference modeling “Reference modeling methods are used to create simplified representations of reality. Starting from observations (inductive) or derived from theories (deductive), these models are designed to represent a planned or optimized system environment.”(Bodendorf et al. 2012) You can use the reference modeling to derive generally applicable recommendations for action from a theory. There are defined steps for this, which you should strictly follow. I give examples of this at the end of the article. Problem: What’s the problem…

In my research I have next to one Group discussion also collected the data. I have one for this quantitative survey carried out. This is used for the quick collection of data that I have in the Round tables could evaluate together with the participants. All of them are always based on a dedicated literature analysis. In this article, I’ll give you some tips on how to do this. Reading tip: Recommended reading The literature analysis summarizes existing knowledge in a meaningful way. A search in academic databases with the help of search strings describes, summarizes, evaluates, clarifies and integrates similar results and approaches (Fettke 2006). Although this does not primarily generate new knowledge, it can help to structure the existing knowledge and to build on it. The procedure includes the literature search, literature evaluation and analysis and interpretation in the context of the research question. The literature analysis consists…

We all know you: Nobel Prize winners are often portrayed as beings from another planet who are intellectually far superior to “normal mortals” (Bodendorf et al. 2010). They often make extremely complex issues extremely complicated. But none of this is rocket science, because it all depends on the correct procedure and the correct presentation. In this article I would therefore like to help you how to set up a research design for a thesis or a research or even a very complex project. However, if you are currently looking for a topic for your research, I recommend another article. Reading tip: Find a topic for a thesis Research methods If you look in Wikipedia a research method is defined as follows: When Research methods In the sciences, processes and analysis techniques are used to clarify scientific questions. In the social sciences in particular, there is a distinction between quantitative Research…

In the course of my doctorate, I only did a few expert interviews at the beginning, but I supervised numerous bachelor and master theses that made use of this method. I even have the feeling that the typical bachelor thesis is what I’m looking for Literature analysis and expert interviews. In the following text I would like to give you some tips. Advantages of an expert interview The purpose of the interview is to ask a selected expert about hypotheses. It is therefore not used to get an overview of a topic, but to evaluate specific points of the literature analysis. So it’s exploratory because you never know what kind of knowledge will be gained. The expert interview therefore has its strength in In contrast to the survey, in unstructured and open questions. To Group discussion it is differentiated by the fact that it is a dialogue between two people.…
