Digitization can now be found everywhere and is spreading like wildfire. I am therefore now writing a whole series of articles on the subject of digitization. My motivation behind this is that digitization means something different for every industry and type of company and I want to work out these differences. An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would now like to go into the real essence of this article and illustrate digitization in the public service. Industry characteristics The administration of data and information is clearly characteristic of the public service. Based on this, important decisions are made, such as notifications of applications or the issuing of important documents. The public service is also in constant exchange and direct communication with the citizen himself. Recently, however, the industry has been developing more and more in the technological…

Generation Y refers to the generation that was born between the early 1980s and the late 1990s. Due to demographic change, they are currently considered to be the most valuable skilled workers and thus represent the future viability of organizations. Numerous experts and magazines as well as science are concerned about how an employer can be attractive to Generation Y. There are also numerous debates about what Generation Y really wants. From ” Crybots and lazy people “as well as from Top performers is the talk. But what does the generation really want and what should it achieve? To this post got me Christoph pause and Dr. Winfried Felser inspired. What does Generation Y really want? The question in the headline is actually answered quickly. Generation Y is looking for meaning and needs feedback in their work. This is easy to say and even more difficult to implement. Christoph Pause…

I have been working for medium-sized IT service providers since the beginning of my career and often work in association with other service providers for changing DAX companies. In doing so, I experience that managing the service providers in particular is very difficult for the end customer. I would therefore like to give some tips and present my findings. This is in the classic organization, if you want to know how to control service providers using agile methods, then read my article on Scrum of Scrums. Define the boundary between service provider and customer First of all, you should know exactly: how much do I really want to give away. Should the service provider do everything himself and I just want a service that works like a mail account or I would like an individual development and have to provide the service provider with permanent requirements and control it. In…

My motivation behind this is that digitization means something different for every industry and type of company and I want to work out these differences. An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the real gist of this article and illustrate digitization in the retail industry. Industry characteristics Typical retailers such as hairdressers, florists, bakers and the like have always seen themselves as classic service providers. While for a long time it was common practice for customers to visit local retailers and thereby support them, the retail industry is now at a critical point. Small retailers in particular saw no need for digitization or the use of big…

My motivation behind this is that digitization means something different for every industry and type of company and I want to work out these differences. An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the actual core of this article and illustrate digitization in the financial sector. Industry characteristics The core task of companies in the financial sector, such as banks, has always been the management of money. However, banks will have to renounce this in the future, because thanks to digitization, key functions, such as the issuing of money, are already being taken over by other agencies such as supermarkets. The financial sector is therefore increasingly exposed to…

An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would now like to go into the actual core of this article and illustrate digitization in the logistics industry. Industry characteristics For a long time, the main task of logistics was the storage, transport and handling of goods. However, due to globalization, this industry has changed increasingly. Their range of services now also includes monitoring and control, i.e. the management of entire supply chains. With this change came demands for more flexible and automated processes, which is why the logistics…

An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the real gist of this article and illustrate digitization in the health and insurance industry. Industry characteristics The health and insurance industry consists of health systems. These can in turn be subdivided into networks with different actors, such as health insurance companies, medical associations or hospitals. The decisions of these actors have a direct or indirect influence on the national health status. Since many different institutions and actors have an influence, great flexibility has always…

Are you currently looking for a topic for a thesis and you don’t yet know exactly how to proceed? Are you looking for literature and want to form a topic from it but you cannot find anything or the supervisor does not accept the topic? Then I would like to show you three ways that can help you with this dilemma! Tip: You should roughly know in which direction you want to go, eg big data, agility, etc. If you don’t already know, then take a look at mine Topic areas for digitization as inspiration. Requirement: existing literature In the academy you always build your knowledge on other studies (existing knowledge). So to do this you need to find other studies first. It is not or hardly possible to research a topic freely without literature in the thesis. You can do that if you later want to win the Nobel…

An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the actual core of this article and illustrate digitization in knowledge work. Industry characteristics Knowledge workers still play a crucial role for their employers, because knowledge is still traded as one of the most valuable resources of mankind. While knowledge work has so far primarily relied on the ability to think and act of the “human” worker, this industry is now also subject to a clear change and is increasingly tending towards work 4.0. In…

An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the real gist of this article and illustrate digitization in the telecommunications industry. Industry characteristics The telecommunications sector is defined by fixed and mobile networks as well as internet access services and the provision of radio signals. Nevertheless: Despite smartphones and the like, the actual use of the phone for making calls is steadily decreasing. But classic products such as broadband connections are also showing falling growth rates. Instead, customers are increasingly relying on a…
