Digitization can now be found everywhere and is spreading like wildfire. I am therefore now writing a whole series of articles on the subject of digitization. My motivation behind this is that digitization means something different for every industry and type of company and I want to work out these differences. An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the actual core of this article and illustrate digitization in knowledge work. Industry characteristics Knowledge workers still play a crucial role for their employers, because knowledge is still traded as one of the most valuable resources of mankind. While knowledge work has so far primarily relied on the ability to think and act of the “human” worker, this industry is now also subject to a clear change and is increasingly tending towards work 4.0. In…

An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the actual core of this article and illustrate digitization in the automotive industry. Industry characteristics In the automotive industry, the focus is clearly on the production of vehicles. IT, like agility, played in the background for a long time because the focus was more on production and lean principles. At the same time, mechanical and design-related innovations in automobiles have long been leading. Nonetheless, in the last few decades the industry has increasingly developed into…

An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the actual core of this article and illustrate digitization in production. Industry characteristics So far, production in the IT sector has mainly benefited from the pure administration of production-related information or the job of processing orders. Due to the lack of technology and the low use of agile methods, complex relationships between processes and production were difficult to decipher and poorly optimized. Many manufacturing companies have already recognized this problem. They have found help in…

My motivation behind this is that digitization means something different for every industry and type of company and I want to work out these differences. An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would now like to go into the real essence of this article and illustrate digitization in the real estate and construction industries. Industry characteristics The focus of the real estate and construction industry is clearly on the asset. For example, the property or the plot of land to be built on itself. The industry is known for its low flexibility and lack of dynamic processes. Because of this, digitization and agile methods have so far only rarely found their way…

The Lean Startup method is on everyone’s lips and is described as best practice. The inventor Eric Ries describes how a product with few chapters can be tried out on the market. The author gives practical examples such as from Dropbox: Dropbox had a landing page online. The founders bought several clicks via Google Adwords. Interested parties could enter their e-mail address in a mailing list in order to receive the beta version of the product when it was ready. The two founders collected 75,000 emails within a few hours. Only then was the Dropbox product built. Thus the idea was evaluated and implemented very favorably. In my opinion, Lean Startup has three phases. While the first phase deals with testing assumptions and building a prototype, phase 2 looks for scaling and phase 3 for growth. In the following I would like to explain the three phases in more detail…

An illustration of the differences in different industries can be found in the following figure. In this section I would like to go into the actual core of this article and illustrate digitization in the craft. Industry characteristics The branch of the handicraft combines human ability with creativity and the handling of materials. The conception of innovation paired with added value and the interdisciplinary linking of ideas and solutions are still the main components of the industry. The craft actually describes by nature that it is linked to flexibility and dynamism. Nevertheless, agile methods and digital support are only…

Digitization is a very broad field and often hardly tangible. From handling data to networking people and machines, the range is very large. As I already did in my Article on digital transformation mentioned, digitization has a major impact on the state, private individuals, individuals, education and companies. With this article, my aim is to give practitioners an overview of the 6 largest subject areas of digitization and give students tips for their thesis. Practical benefits For you as a practitioner, the topics are primarily provided Line an overview. From this you can choose which of the subject areas Could have relevance for your company. It is clear that not everyone Topic can be relevant in every company. Benefit for students As a student, you are certainly still looking for a topic for your thesis. I recommend defining a broad topic area in my article at the beginning. This should…

Are you in the middle of searching for literature for your thesis and you have the feeling that you are slowly but surely losing the overview? Are you looking for a way of better reference management to make your collection of important books, internet sources, articles and PDFS clearer and more efficient? You are certainly not alone in this. Students are constantly faced with precisely this problem of chaotic reference management. After all, organizing it yourself is often hardly profitable, especially for extensive work. What many don’t use or don’t even know: There are special programs that can help you manage your sources. Many universities and colleges even make some of them available to their students. But there are also many different options for orderly reference management that can be found and used on the Internet. In this context, this article will not only help you understand how a reference…

Too often do you read articles that generally report on digitization and consider certain aspects to be absolutely important? However, you think to yourself: “This does not apply to my industry or it does not work in my company”. Home office alone has hardly lost any meaning in production and Industry 4.0 in knowledge work. So not all knowledge can be transferred without restrictions to every branch and type of company! In order to fill this gap, I analyzed more than 4000 literature sources on digitization and broken them down into the individual types of companies and industries. In doing so, I took 5 major trends in digitization and prepared them for industries and types of company. The status is April 2019. After completion, I would like to deepen the results in the course of 2019 with expert interviews from the respective industries. The digitization trend radar will therefore be…

Good theses are not only complex and time-consuming, they also come from the intellectual property of the author. Many students underestimate the importance of the unique item, which a thesis must be in accordance with mandatory requirements, and accordingly forego a plagiarism check. One fact that students tend to ignore: Before a lecturer even takes a closer look at your thesis, he will first subvert it with the help of a special program of an examination. This determines whether your thesis is plagiarized. If the program finds reasonable doubts about the uniqueness, this can immediately lead to the failure of your thesis. Although this procedure has been the norm at colleges and universities for years, many students still do not know exactly what to consider when writing a thesis. This article therefore clarifies the question “What is plagiarism anyway?” and also refers to the advantages and disadvantages of the exam.…
